Volume Three: Promoting a Fit America: Trimming the Health Disparities Faced by Black Americans

INTRODUCTION

Greetings!

My name is Nicole Brisbane and I am the 2008-2009 President of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at Emory University.  As the host chapter for the 2008-2009 Southern Region Black Law Students Association Law Journal, it is an honor and pleasure for Emory BLSA to announce the third edition.

The third edition of the Journal focuses on the health of the black community. While we traditionally think of health as encompassing one’s physical well-being, the articles in this Journal demonstrate how the government, societal flaws, and frequent injustice shape not only the physical health of African Americans, but also the emotional, mental and spiritual health of the black communities in the South, and throughout the United States.

The Journal is a student-run publication that attempts to select articles that will further the Journal’s mission to serve as a vehicle for social, economical, and political uplift in the South. However, with every insight gained comes a duty; a duty to act. On behalf of the editors and contributors to this publication, we hope that the truths unveiled on the pages ahead move you to action. In the words of the great Martin Luther King, Jr., “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

Thank you for your continued support!

In BLSA love,

Nicole Ann-Marie Brisbane

Emory BLSA President 2008-2009

Candidate for Juris Doctor 2010
